YourTransferable Skills

What are they? These are skills or abilities you have picked up over time either from previous jobs, hobbies, school or in your social life.

The most common ones that are employers are looking for are (depending on the role):

• Problem solving
• Working on your own initiative
• Leadership
• Team work
• Communication skills
• Customer service skills
• Flexibility/Adaptability (especially in current times)
• Attention to detail
• Listening
• Creativity
• Relationship building

These are soft skills and are often the most important as technical skills can be taught. It is always worth looking at an advert or job spec to see what soft skills are required and include these in your personal profile on your CV as well as having examples ready to offer at interview stage.

Transferable skills are also really important to highlight if you are looking to change your career.

An example of transferable skills:

If you work within hospitality you are likely to have the ability to deal with customers face to face and think on your feet (especially if there is a problem that needs dealing with). That is a transferable skill that could be used in almost any other industry.
