Candidate Hub Video Interviewing

One of the areas that has really changed during the pandemic is the way interviews are conducted. Most interviews are taking place on line over a video chat through Teams, Zoom or Google meet, etc.

Our candidates often ask us for hints and tips as to how to make the best impression so here are a few:

First of all check your internet connection.  Often you will be sent a link to follow well in advance of your interview. Click the link and make sure you can access it.

Find somewhere with good light to have your interview.  Somewhere that is quiet and with as little possible interruptions as possible.  I think most interviewers have had the odd interruption by a small child or animal but in the main try and make sure you won't be interrupted.

Do prepare before the interview, it is really important to understand the organisation you could be working for and try and look up the person who will be interviewing you on LinkedIn.     Prepare some interview questions, this could include as an example "how would training be provided if I am working remotely?".  "When are you looking for someone to start in the role".

Do dress appropriately for an interview.  Choose a nice top, nothing too distracting or too casual.  Most of the time (unless the company are very corporate) a business suit wouldn't be necessary and might look too much. In most cases it is perfectly acceptable to wear a shirt without a tie.

Remember to smile and maintain eye contact with your interviewers.

If something goes wrong with the tech, i.e. you can't connect or you lose connection, don't automatically assume that they can't hear you.  They might not be able to see you but you don't want them to hear you swearing or getting cross if something has gone wrong.  In these sorts of situations, the way you handle it could be a good selling point to the interviewer as it demonstrates how you cope with a stressful situation.

Remember, enjoy the interview and Good luck.
